Toleration and reasonableness

This chapter focuses on the two notions of toleration and reasonableness and on the ways in which they may relate to each other. The core idea is that reason- ableness acts as prerequisite for toleration or even a source of it. Being reasonable makes one well-disposed to being tolerant. The reciprocal implications of rea- sonableness and toleration will be perused through a comparison between John Locke’s and John Rawls’s respective ideas. At the end of the debate about Rawlsian reasonableness and its relevant flaws, the challenge for future research is to go on revisiting such notion in order to make it more and more inclusive and tolerant.
