In engaging with the pair Language and Science of the Handbook project, this contribution takes the perspective of the Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) classroom and academic writing development. It advocates a combined corpus and rhetorical genre approach to the development of academic literacy, as a pedagogically richer possibility of enculturating learners into the language of science. After reviewing the state-of-the-art in the corpus approach to language and science, the proposed pedagogy will be illustrated through the use of concordances for materials and tasks design to analyse scientific vocabulary as well as frequent phraseology of scientific discourse that is associated with certain moves of different genres of scientific communication.
