Neural stem cells are multipotent cells present in the central nervous system. Neural stem cells can self-renew and give rise to neurons and glial cells. Ample evidence supports the important role of neural stem cells in the plasticity of the central nervous system during aging, disease, and repair. Transplantation of neural stem cells into injured areas of the central nervous system can lead to neural regeneration in animal models, holding promises for the development of efficacious cell-based therapeutic alternatives to treat neurological disorders.

Abstract

Neural stem cells are multipotent cells present in the central nervous system. Neural stem cells can self-renew and give rise to neurons and glial cells. Ample evidence supports the important role of neural stem cells in the plasticity of the central nervous system during aging, disease, and repair. Transplantation of neural stem cells into injured areas of the central nervous system can lead to neural regeneration in animal models, holding promises for the development of efficacious cell-based therapeutic alternatives to treat neurological disorders.
