This contribution aims to argue that a utopian vision of gender relations is inspired by a humanistic and progressive perspective. Gender relations, in Thomas More’s humanistic utopia and other examples, are inspired by a certain equality, at least in some respects. In contrast, in theocratic and technocratic utopias, relations between genders are hierarchical and subject to the utility of the state. Thus, in a contemporary utopian perspective, the traits of equality and freedom fit into the humanistic evaluation of the value of persons and the general principle that relationship precedes function.

Abstract

This contribution aims to argue that a utopian vision of gender relations is inspired by a humanistic and progressive perspective. Gender relations, in Thomas More’s humanistic utopia and other examples, are inspired by a certain equality, at least in some respects. In contrast, in theocratic and technocratic utopias, relations between genders are hierarchical and subject to the utility of the state. Thus, in a contemporary utopian perspective, the traits of equality and freedom fit into the humanistic evaluation of the value of persons and the general principle that relationship precedes function.
