Fluorescein angiography (FA) is a diagnostic imaging technique involving the injection of a fluorescent dye, such as fluorescein, into a patient's bloodstream and then capturing images of the dye as it flows through the blood vessels of the retina. The dye becomes florescent when exposed to a certain wavelength of light, allowing the clinician to visualize the blood vessels and detect any abnormalities or diseases that may be present. FA is commonly used to diagnose and monitor various eye conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. In recent years, new techniques, such as widefield imaging, have expanded the area of the retina that can be imaged in a single session, allowing for more comprehensive assessments of the retina and its blood flow. In this section, we will review the main applications of FA, considering this exam as a valuable tool for clinicians ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
