Abstract

Despite the relevance of the concepts of personhood and personality in classic (late ancient and medieval), modern and contemporary philosophy, the corresponding treatment of individuality in mainstream ontology is far from the riches and rigor of former metaphysics, from Boetius to Duns Scotus to Leibniz. The theory of individual essences in Husserlian and Schelerian Phenomenology renews this “tradition of Haecceity”, while meeting the logical and analytical standards of contemporary metaphysics.
