Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is currently the second cause of visual impairment due to retinal disease just after diabetic retinopathy. Branch retinal vein occlusions (BRVO) are complicated by macular edema (ME) in up to 98% of cases. ME is the major cause of BRVO-related visual acuity impairment. The diffusion of intravitreal drugs, like VEGF inhibitors (anti-VEGF) or implantable steroids, have dramatically changed the ME management and its prognosis. Therefore, we aim to summarize and review the main clinical and therapeutic aspects of this condition. © 2013 Informa UK Ltd.
