This paper explores the possibility of employing Arendt's notion of the right to have rights for non-humans. After discussing Arendt's view and Rancière's reading, the paper will consider whether rights are the best means to protect non-humans and the margins, and whether these entities possess rights even when unable to advocate for them, concluding that extending rights could have a positive effect on humans and non-humans. The last section applies this reading to the debate about animal rights.

Abstract

This paper explores the possibility of employing Arendt's notion of the right to have rights for non-humans. After discussing Arendt's view and Rancière's reading, the paper will consider whether rights are the best means to protect non-humans and the margins, and whether these entities possess rights even when unable to advocate for them, concluding that extending rights could have a positive effect on humans and non-humans. The last section applies this reading to the debate about animal rights.
