In this paper, I briefly introduce the phenomenological concept of the body and offer some reflections on the experience of the ill body. To inquire into the ill body is to focus on the experience of illness as lived by each person through their own body. My discussion proceeds in two stages. First, I examine the phenomenological distinction between the physical-material body and the lived body, as well as the constitutive role of the lived body in shaping each person’s identity. Second, I reflect on the experience of illness, advancing the idea that illness is experienced by persons as a constellation of negative modifications in their experience of their own lived body.

Abstract

In this paper, I briefly introduce the phenomenological concept of the body and offer some reflections on the experience of the ill body. To inquire into the ill body is to focus on the experience of illness as lived by each person through their own body. My discussion proceeds in two stages. First, I examine the phenomenological distinction between the physical-material body and the lived body, as well as the constitutive role of the lived body in shaping each person’s identity. Second, I reflect on the experience of illness, advancing the idea that illness is experienced by persons as a constellation of negative modifications in their experience of their own lived body.
