Demetrio Neri’s thought on moral philosophy in general is exposed in his Filosofia morale. Manuale introduttivo (1999, 20132). His approach is based on both analytic argumentation and historical awareness and shows an interest in the interplay between good reasoning and a critical attitude against dogmatism. His conception of ethics is based on the idea that morality springs from social and cultural conditions and that moral philosophy is the critical reflection resulting from the practice of individual and public choice. His critique of subjectivist relativism is brilliant and his acceptance of a moderate form of conventionalism creates the space for both pluralism and the critique of unacceptable moral ideas (such as the practice of sacrificing human beings). Finally, he makes good use of the Italian philosophical tradition in an otherwise international discussion.
